Getting Published
Many coursework postgraduate students don't even consider that they might have opportunities to publish their work. However, publishing is always a possibility for well-researched and well-presented new material, whether you're a coursework or a research postgraduate. If you think that a major essay, report or minor thesis you've submitted is of a particularly high standard or if your lecturer has indicated that your data is exciting and deserves more attention, don't hesitate to pursue the option of getting published! If you're not even sure where to start, consider the following potential publications:
- Traffic is UMPA's journal for postgraduate writing. They're always looking for fresh perspectives from the University's postgrads, and prefer a style of writing that is accessible to those outside your discipline.
- Departmental journals - The postgraduate associations of many departments and schools publish their own journals, and these can be a great platform for your writing.
- Disciplinary journals - Given that you are surely using many journals in your discipline for your own research, you should be able to work out their audience, purpose, tone and style in order to submit an article to one appropriate to your writing and topic.
- Newspapers - Especially with the University's focus on the Knowledge Transfer aspect of Growing Esteem, newspapers are a good way to connect with the broader community. In particular, Op-Ed (Opinion) pieces are a good place to start.
- Conferences - Try putting in an abstract for a conference you'd like to attend. Many conference papers lead to publications in conference proceedings, on CD-ROMs or online.
