Writing Habits

Now that you're enrolled in a postgraduate degree, your two essential activities are to read and write. Rather than approaching these in an ad hoc manner, it's worth taking some time to reflect on your usual habits. Remember, there isn't necessarily a set of perfect habits for you to develop - instead there is simply always room to be more efficient and productive.

Reflect on your typical habits as a writer:

  1. Do you set aside blocks of time (3-4 hours) for writing or do you write in between other tasks?

  2. How do you develop a first draft - for example, do you make a plan and write linearly or do you freely write to various ideas and then try to 'stick quotes in' to support your ideas?

  3. What has helped you to develop your academic writing over the years - practice, feedback on drafts, reading widely?
