What first? Where is everything?
To help you get started, here's a menu of the many resources available to you as a postgraduate student.
- The Academic Skills Unit offers advice and instruction on academic and language skills. They provide workshops, classes, online courses and printed resources covering a broad range of study skills and written and oral communication. They are also available for individual tutorials focused on the specific needs of students.
- AIRport is an online support program for new University of Melbourne undergraduates, full of resources including transition, general study skills, academic writing, tutor-moderated short courses and faculty-specific academic materials. Postgraduates may also find the writing skills exercises useful.
- Campus Virtual Tour A QuickTime Virtual Reality tour which can be navigated using a map of Parkville campus. Good for getting a visual sense of major campus locations.
- Careers & Employment offer career counselling, employment information and a range of programs including career fairs and seminars to help you develop your career and employment skills.
- Children's Services The University provides child care facilities at Swanston Street Children's Centre and Queensberry Children's Centre for the University Community. The Waiting List is for the current year only and opens in October of the previous year. Supply Children's Services in August/September with your name and address to receive the full waiting list package in October.
- Computing support The IT Kit brings together a range of computer resources for students: licensed software, help guides and information on IT classes. It will also help you set up your university email account. Work out who your local IT support person is and make friends with him/her. You never know when you may need a little help.
- The Counselling Service provides free counselling services to students and staff of the University.
- The Disability Liaison Unit offers a free and confidential service for enrolled students of the University, including students at regional campuses. To find out more about the range of services offered by the DLU and other information that is relevant to students with disabilities visit the pages on the Students site.
- Student Financial Aid can assist graduate students facing financial hardship.
- GradFlash Get all the latest information for postgrads by subscribing to this weekly update, including news about short courses, scholarships and social gatherings.
- The University Health Service is a general practitioner service, but staff have particular skills and interests in contraception; sexual health; injuries from work, sport, or study; allergies and skin disorders; travel health; and mental health issues such as anxiety, depression and eating disorders. There are male and female doctors available, and you may also see a nurse. The University Health Service also refers to outside specialists when necessary.
- The Student Housing Services team aims to enhance the Melbourne Experience by assisting students to source and maintain affordable, safe and appropriate housing.
- International Student Services (ISS) staff are available to provide advice and support to all international students, as well as coordinating a number of programs throughout the year.
- University Library Familiarise yourself with the wide range of services on offer through the university's libraries. As well as a rich collection of resources, the libraries offer a number of courses on information literacies, such as searching databases and using EndNote. Information Services offers specialised, individual consultations for postgraduates.
- Scholarships & Grants The Melbourne Scholarships Office provides information about a range of scholarships, grants and bursaries available to postgraduate students. In addition, JASON is an online resource for many more Australian and international sources of funding. Scholarships available to coursework postgrads.
- The Melbourne School of Graduate Research (MSGR) offers a range of services and programs to postgraduates, including Academic Skills Programs, Academic Program for International Postgraduates and Advanced Leadership & Professional Skills. The SGS is located in the beautiful old 1888 Building, known as the Graduate Centre, on Grattan St near the corner of Swanston. You will also find GSA housed in the Graduate Centre, as well as study spaces and computer labs.
- Seminar series Check out your department website for information about seminars and lectures in your field. You can find your department from the faculties' listing at The research administrator or postgraduate coordinator in your department should also forward emails of relevant seminars and conferences to you.
- Melbourne University Sport is a members-only facility offering a broad range of health, well-being and fitness options, with reduced membership rates for students. There are also more than 40 affiliated sporting, recreational and instructional clubs and a Melbourne Uni Ski Lodge at Mt Buller.
- Student Administration offers everything from enrolment to finding out your class and exam timetables.
- The Student Union offers representation, support and services to all University students. The Student Union building houses a number of cafes, shops, a newsagent and bar. Joining the Student Union gives you access to free and discounted services. The Student Union covers a whole spectrum from the fun stuff like entertainment and arts to services that offer support for academic and legal issues.
- Transition Whether you are returning to study after a break or continuing straight from undergraduate study and whether you have studied at a different institution or already spent time at The University of Melbourne, becoming a postgraduate means you will experience a transition. The Transition & Orientation team aims to help you make that transition period as smooth and as successful as possible by providing advice, information and referral to relevant services and resources.
- The Graduate Students Association (GSA) is the student representative body for postgraduates at the University of Melbourne. GSA's members include those undertaking a Grad Dip, Postgrad Dip, Masters, PhD and other doctorates. As well as acting as an advocate and support for postgraduates, GSA organizes social events for students to meet others from across the faculties. GSA Councillors also represent students' interests on over 40 University Committees.
