The University's Expectations

A useful document for all commencing students of the University is the Graduate Attributes. The attributes listed can help you identify exactly what it is you should get from the experience of doing this degree. The University has gone to great lengths to tailor these attributes to each level of degree.

Check where you are in your progress towards the desired attributes below:

  1. An advanced understanding of the changing knowledge base in the specialist area.

  2. An ability to evaluate and synthesise the research and professional literature in the discipline.

  3. Advanced skills and techniques applicable to the discipline.

  4. Well-developed problem-solving abilities in the discipline area, characterised by flexibility of approach.

  5. Advanced competencies in areas of professional expertise and/or scholarship.

  6. A capacity to articulate their knowledge and understanding in oral and written presentations.

  7. An advanced understanding of the international context and sensitivities of the specialist area.

  8. An appreciation of the design, conduct and reporting of original research.

  9. A capacity to manage competing demands on time, including self-directed project work.

  10. A profound respect for truth and intellectual integrity, and for the ethics of scholarship.

  11. An appreciation of the ways in which advanced knowledge equips the student to offer leadership in the specialist area.

  12. The capacity to value and participate in projects which require team work.

  13. An understanding of the significance and value of their knowledge to the wider community (including business and industry).

  14. A capacity to engage where appropriate with issues in contemporary society.

  15. Where appropriate, advanced working skills in the application of computer systems and software and a receptiveness to the opportunities offered by new technologies.
