Mens sana in corpore sano
(Juvenal) - A sound mind in a healthy body...
Did you know that Melbourne University Sport is for all students (postgrad and undergrad) as well as alumni and staff? The clubs are great places to meet a range of people and enjoy a social or competitive activity. They cater for all levels, whether you've never tried the sport before or are an old pro'. You could learn to tango, rhumba or swing dance , learn to play touch football, join social or competitive badminton, netball or tennis, or simply go along and watch the top University teams compete in State and National competitions right here on campus. Check out the basketball and volleyball clubs' websites for more information on these competitions.
Perhaps you want to explore the great outdoors but haven't got time to organise things? Then the horseriding, mountaineering, snowboarding or sailing clubs might be worth looking into. Did you know that Melbourne Uni owns a Ski Lodge at Mt Buller? It provides cheap, clean accommodation all year round, whether you like to ski in winter or bushwalk in summer.
And I haven't even mentioned the Sports Centre's new gym and pool facilities yet…
On Your Bike!
Not all physical activity has to be coordinated by Melbourne Uni Sport, of course. One of the most fulfilling communities you can belong to is the cyclist's. Riding your bike to uni serves to clear your mind, exercise your body, save your pennies and treat the earth gently. You might like to ride in regularly with a friend or partner, and you can get to know other enthusiasts by joining Bicycle Victoria or a local bicycle users group like Darebin BUG. And now that you've committed all your time to study, probably work, and possibly family, finding time for exercise can be quite difficult - so why not make it your commute?
