Social bookmarking
Do you work on multiple computers - in computer labs, at work, home or even internet cafes? If so, or even if not, social bookmarking is for you! You know when you're doing research online at uni and you want to go back to that site you found last week, but unfortunately, you bookmarked it on your computer at home? If you had tagged it on a social bookmarking site such as furl, simpy or del.icio.us, you'd have access to it from any computer with an internet connection. Not only that, you can see what other people who tagged that site have also tagged. It's a bit like checking the bibliography of an article or book for the resources the author found useful. Finally, social bookmarking revolutionises how you organise your bookmarks - no more searching through folders limited to one topic - instead you give each 'bookmark' multiple keywords or 'tags' that are searchable and organisable into categories. Most social bookmarking sites also have an option to make bookmarks public or private.
del.icio.us is the most famous example of social bookmarking, but there's also furl and others, as well as the academic social bookmarking site citeulike, where scholars bookmark academic papers specifically.
